The Waikato River is steeped in history and legends. There was once a time the waka ruled this mighty river, with waka taua moving warriors up and down the river to and from battles. The river became a gateway to the Waikato for the government and the settlers during the land wars. It now supplies power and water to New Zealand's biggest citys.
